This big guy is a gentle giant!

This is Lynn Zuccaro's (creator of Sir Walsh Horsemanship) little niece riding on top of who may you ask?  But of course it is Sir Walsh himself!  As you have read, Sir Walsh is no pony and as you can see for such a big guy, he sure is gentle!  Your son or daughter will love experiencing their first horse experience with Sir Walsh and Instructor Lynn.  The summer program begins June 10th, so sign up early and sign up often as the program runs until the end of summer!  That's plenty of time to get the full experience of true horsemanship.  Please contact Lynn directly at 305-522-2244 for registration details.

What's bugging your horse?

Are the flies and mosquitos already bugging (no pun intended) you and your horse? With all of the recent rain we have had and with much more coming in the next few days, we all need to be prepared for all those pesky little creatures that drive us and our horses crazy!  What do you do for bug control at your barn?  I started making my own homemade, all natural bug spray a couple of months ago and have found that it works better than anything I have ever purchased in the feed stores.  It also smells amazing!

Did you know?

Did you know that it is a law in the United States that at exactly 3:00 PM on Memorial Day you must pause for a moment of silence?  Let's keep that in mind today as we all remember that our freedom isn't free and those that sacrifice so much for our safety need to be thanked for all that they do!

Who is Sir Walsh you ask?

Those of you who have been following have noticed that I have been plugging a summer horse program called Sir Walsh Horsemanship.  Who is Sir Walsh, you ask?  Well, let me fill you in on a little trivia about this 16 year old Thoroughbred gelding born in Illinois on February 7th.  Walsh began his racing career at the age of 3 and retired at the age of 8.  He raced a total of 72 times.  He won 9 races, came in 2nd in 8 races and placed 3rd in 11 races.  His total winnings were over $50,000!  After his racing career was over, he was privately owned.  About 3 years ago he became a school horse at Coconut Palm Equestrian Center.  When the property was sold to the SFSPCA, Walsh again took a much needed break on greener pastures in Grant, FL.  Now Sir Walsh is ready to go and waiting for all the new boys and girls attending the summer horse program at Top Notch Stables to fall in love with him!  For more information, please contact Instructor Lynn Zuccaro (pictured here riding Sir Walsh) at 305-522-2244 or at ponygirllynn@gmail.com.

Meet Nate Gold

I like to give credit when credit is due and today I would like to introduce my followers to my West Coast (of FL) equestrian friend Nate Gold.  I first met Nate about five years ago when I went to go see a Monty Roberts demo in WPB.  Nate was Monty's assistant.  After the demo a few of us got talking to Nate and asked him to come visit the SFSPCA rescue ranch to work with some of our horses.  Nate was an instant hit and passed on valuable knowledge to all of us.  Since then, he has started his own business called Gold Horse Training out of Myakka, Florida.  Nate is a natural when it comes to horses.  He has been blessed with a gift from God that he is able to pass on to all the horses he works with and the owners as well.  If you would like more information on Gold Horse Training, please visit his website: www.goldhorsetraining.com.  Way to go Nate!

South Florida Horse Connection to expand!!!

Ok, so here is the deal....South Florida Horse Connection is trying to expand their operations.  We would like to offer South Florida and all of the horse communities that follow us much more than just our FB page and blog of great events and information.  We would like to be able to have our own location to be able to hold informational clinics and things that YOU, the South Florida horse enthusiast want to hear and see! But in order for us to accomplish this, we are in need of a new location.  We are currently looking to lease/rent a barn that EVERYONE can come to and reap the benefits of our growth. So, if you happen to know anyone out there that may have a barn with some decent property attached, please contact us and let us know!  Thanks

30 horses die in NY trailer fire

This story really never got the media attention yesterday that it deserved and that is just an outrage!  Thirty horses that were being transported to Canada to be slaughtered burned alive in the transport trailer they were being hauled in Tuesday in upstate NY.  If their fate wasn't bad enough, they then had to endure a hell that none of us could imagine-being in a confined space, panic stricken and burned to death.  The driver tried to extinguish the fire, but did it ever occur to him, just to open the door to let the horses out?  The incident is still under investigation.  I hope that every previous owner of each of the thirty horses being transported lives with the guilt of those horses fate for the rest of their lives.  I know that is wishful thinking, but after such a heart wrenching story that is all I have.....

A sad story to report...

As my blog followers may or may not know, the county (Miami-Dade) that I live in in Florida is unfortunately known for things other than it's sunny weather and beaches.  We have a horse slaughter issue here.  On Tuesday another horse by the name of Destiny was found just feet from her stall as she was stolen from her stall and slaughtered for her meat.  Some of you following from other countries where eating horse meat is a delicacy won't see an issue with this story; however, this horse was not raised for it's meat.  This was someone's pet, their beloved equestrian partner.  This is not a new issue here where I live.  It's been going on for years.  There is a dynamic here that many don't understand.  With the economic downturn, many people here in S Florida found feed prices skyrocketing.  The question became whether or not they feed themselves or feed their animals.  Many horses here just get dumped because the uneducated horse owner thinks that a horse can fend for themselves out in the wild just like their ancestors did.  The problem they don't understand is that we have domesticated the horse for many a year now and those instincts are gone.  So many are found starved.  Some owners try to sell their horses on craigslist for "cheap".  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the slaughterers are just buying up those animals for their meat as well.  In addition, it is known on the black market who pays the best per pound, so if you can't feed your horse and need some extra cash, you find out who to call and your problem is solved.  If this isn't bad enough and doesn't make your blood boil, then there are those who just out right steal the horse and lead it to slaughter - usually not too far from where the horse lived comfortably and where the owners believed it was safe.  Diligence is the best answer.  We protect our computers and our material belongings in our homes better than we protect our animals!  As a horse community we all need to band together to put a stop to this.  Help out your neighbor, if you see he may not have the proper security on his farm and not be able to afford it.  Make sure your property is well lit, has proper security measures.  It doesn't take a lot of money to do this, just a little imagination and determination. Most importantly if you see something that looks suspicious, call the police!  It's better to be safe than sorry.
